My Perspective

There are times when clients or others on their behalf have an idea what type of therapy is best for them. As a clinician, I openly discuss with my clients what is available on the market of psychological therapy and we both decide on which road to take in our therapeutic journey.

Often, clients tell me that they have tried counselling/therapy in the past and it did not work. Perhaps, they say that their therapist/counsellor did his/her best but they (clients) failed him or her because they could not get better.

I believe that client always tries his/her best in treatment. When we start working together I often see signs that point to a deeper problem. It becomes clear that the client struggles to concentrate in the therapy room and outside in his/her private life, or battles in relationships. Often, there are terrible mood swings during the day, disconnection from the world, as if the person is behind the glass wall. There is often a history of self-harm and/or suicidal thoughts.

If I could take a picture of mind and feelings, perhaps it will look something like this:

For complex presentations, schema therapy is a long-term treatment from one-to-three years, depending on the client’s functioning level. For others, a shorter time frame may be beneficial.
